LA Lee Mizell YMCA Community Center, What’s Your Elephant and Niki Lopez Presents :

The Art of Justice: Art-Making as Catalyst for Social Justice and Collective Action

Series from July 2021 - January 2022

The LA Lee Mizell YMCA Community Center and Niki Lopez of What’s Your Elephant present “The Art of Justice: Art-Making as Catalyst for Social Justice and Collective Action” an art-making series that features social justice-themed presentations, artist-led workshops across literary, visual, and performing arts, and culminating showcases that highlight the work created in the workshops while encouraging critical conversations about access, advocacy, agency, and collective action.

Each lens will have:

1 Day: art-making workshop day & community conversation centered on that lens.

1 Day: a showcase of work from the workshop, art from artists, open mic, community dialogue, featured performance artist

This series will culminate in January 2022 with some of the works from each lens, performances.

** Since the new LA Lee Mizell YMCA Community Center is under construction, the first several events will be virtual.

What's Your Elephant LGBTQ Series

#nikilopezpresents #whatsyourelephant

What's Your Elephant™ is a movement that uses the arts to create safe spaces to address the unspoken.

What's Your Elephant™ (WYE) is a combination of art exhibits, interactive installations, discussions, and workshops that are designed to provoke awareness by unveiling unaddressed topics. Themes often include, but are not limited to: gender, sexuality, discrimination, and abuse. WYE shows us how art can heal and be a tool to process complex conversations, helping us to unpack the things that we, and the world around us, are challenged by. WYE also intentionally aims to destigmatize mental health topics and counseling.

WYE collaborates with artists of all types, at-risk groups, non-profits, corporate organizations, grassroots entities, and the general public to uplift the value of the creative arts in assisting us with self-healing, which only strengthens our interpersonal and community ties.

The What's Your Elephant™ series has typically explored many 'elephants,’ though sometimes there is an annual focus. This year, our series will highlight LGBTQ+ communities. We will be collaborating with grassroots community partners such as NAMI Broward County, World AIDS Museum and Educational Center, Ujima Men's Collective, Black Lesbian Archives, and Transpire Trainings & Consulting, and inviting our communities to make art, get vulnerable, and connect.

WYE 2021/2022 will offer a hybrid of both in-person and virtual events.

Opening night: Friday, August 20, 2021;

1310 Gallery 6:30-8 PM  at the 1310 Gallery, Sailboat Bend Artist Lofts.

Theme:

There are many ‘elephants’ that LGBTQ+ and non-LGBTQ people share. However, there are also ‘elephants’ that specifically and disproportionately impact LGBTQ+ communities. This year, our goal is to address topics and challenges related to experiencing life as an LGBTQ+ person.

Call for Art:

Open to all mediums, including paintings, sculpture, installation art, video art, mixed media, 2D and 3D works. Preference is given to interactive and/or installation pieces. Submitted artwork should fit or complement the theme “Elephant in the Room,” and should address 'elephants' within LGBTQ+ communities and spaces. Works can be conceptual or literal in context.

All works must be original, and hang-ready or virtual display ready. Artists are responsible for getting their work to any applicable drop-off locations.

This call is open to South Florida artists for the in-person exhibition, and this year’s virtual show exhibit is open to displaying digital works from anywhere in the country.

Adjusting to COVID-19:

Due to the current state of the pandemic, and varying levels of comfort and safety, there will be a mix of in-person events (adhering to the most updated COVID safety protocols), as well as entirely virtual art-making workshops, showcases and events.

Series Kickoff:

Note: CALL FOR ARTISTS is for local art only, with in-person exhibition to take place at the 1310 Gallery in Fort Lauderdale, FL
